The life long effect cyber bullying can have on both young people and the older generations. It is just as horrifying, sometimes worse as being bullied verbally and physically. Cyber bullying can effect both the mental and physical state of a person. Sometimes the bullying can be that traumatising, that one may take their life. “Almost half of young Australians surveyed report being bullied face-to-face, online or both” (Wellbeing Australia Admin, 2012)
There are many different forms of cyber bullying, they include harassment, hateful, threatening messages, posts and materials which are through the use of digital media such as Facebook, twitter and tumblr. Potential openings where cyber bullying may occur are computers, mobile phones, digital cameras and all Internet enabled devices if they are used inappropriately. Too many of todays teenagers are able to say harsh words behind a phone and a computer but could never say it to the opposing persons face. This is known as a keyboard warrior.
Cyber bullying is becoming such an issue because students will refrain from seeking help as they are in fear that they will be bullied even more. Unlike bullying in a school environment, where if a teacher views it happening they can discipline, there has to be enough evidence for any action to be taken.
As an example of using an online game to enhance awareness of cyberbullying I would get students to visit this site http://www.nsteens.org/games/cyberbullyzombies where cyberbullying zombies are attacking NSHigh! Students are to protect the school by destroying all of the zombies – or else they are going to share the IM’s you sent about your crush with everyone in school. (Net Smart Teens, 2001)
